"Dream A Little Dream of Me" (click the video above to listen to Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong sing!)

You’re here to dream—not only when you sleep, but also when you’re awake. The world is a dream. The whole universe of things and beings is a long dream. Since antiquity, dreams prophecies have been viewed as a source of divination, as a form of reality, as a curative force, and as an extension or adjunct of the waking state. Dreams are a succession of images, thoughts, feelings or sensations that occur during sleep. Dreaming often mixes mundane aspects of waking life with strange and symbolic, supernatural reflections of reality.

Dreams were always held to be extremely important for divination (“to foresee, to foretell, to predict, to prophesy”). An oracle or medium provides wise and insightful counsel through dream portals for interpretations of creations from consciousness. It is only after waking that we realize the potential for our dreams to materialize.

Here is my White Witch’s guide to all things related to dreams and dreaming:

Awake Dreaming, or manifesting our own realities, is possible. Start with a vision, a reality that you want to manifest, and get into that mindset and put that out into the universe. Convince yourself to truly believe in your dreams. Trust the universe and believe in your vision.

Day Dreaming is the stream of consciousness that detaches from current, external tasks when attention drifts to a more personal and internal direction. You are drifting away from your present experience to think about pleasant or wishful thoughts while awake.

Oneiromancy is a form of divination based upon dreams. The dreamer feels as if they are transported to another time or place, and this is offered as evidence that they are in fact providing divine information upon their return. Oneironautics refers to the ability to travel within a dream while conscious. Such a traveler in a dream may be called an oneironaut.

Dream Telepathy is when one person is able to consciously travel or interact within the dream of another. This suggests that human beings have the ability to communicate telepathically with another person while they are dreaming. Thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations are transmitted from one mind to another.

False Awakening is a vivid and convincing dream about awakening from sleep while the dreamer in reality continues to sleep. A false awakening refers to the strange experience of

“waking up” when you actually remain asleep. You mistakenly feel like you’ve woken up to later realize you were still asleep and it was all a dream.

Hypnagogia is the transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep.

During this period, you transition into the dream world. Hypnopompia is the transitional state that occurs before waking up. These states are somewhere in between wakefulness and sleep, or sleep and wakefulness.

In Asleep Dreaming, we are not aware that we are sleeping on the bed and dreaming. Whether we are awake or asleep, the sleeping dream is natural or supernatural. The holistic nature of human consciousness is natural while the supernatural dreams of the human psyche are vivid.

Pre-lucid Dreaming happens when a dreamer starts to wonder if they are dreaming (even if they don’t become fully lucid) and the dreamer considers the question “Am I asleep and dreaming?” Lucid dreaming is when a dreamer becomes aware they are dreaming.

Lucid dreaming, however, is when you’re conscious during a dream.  Lucid dreaming might help by letting the dreamer control the dream. Additionally, when a dreamer knows they’re dreaming, they can recognize that the nightmare isn’t real. Waking up in a dream and having complete control within the dream is lucid dreaming.

Directed Dreaming is when a person in a lucid dream takes control over what happens in the dream. Lucid dreaming happens when you’re aware that you’re dreaming. Often, you can control the dream. This is a technique where one can learn to control their own dreams and retain a conscious memory of it.

Looping is when a person keeps “waking up” again and again in a dream. It is similar to lucid dreaming and false awakening. You are completely unaware that you are actually dreaming. At times, the individual can perform actions unknowingly.

Non-realism or non-sensical in a dream (such as spaces with impossible proportions) or the dreamer cannot do things (like talk or scream) can be dissociation: an out-of-body experience in which the dreamer perceives the dream as an outside observer.

Recurring Dreams is a dream which is experienced repeatedly over a long period of time.  Unresolved and persistent conflicts are dreams that repeat more than once.

Dream Residues are traces of memories of the dream and the dreamer’s impression upon awakening. The details are not meaningless, but they can be translated to explain the significance of the dream.

What kind of dream will you dream up tonight?
