The Chinese zodiac system is based on traditional astronomy but rooted in zoolatry, or animal worship, with the system dating back more than 2,000 years. Chinese zodiac, or sheng xiao (/shnng-sshyao/ (生肖), “born resembling”), is represented by 12 zodiac animals.

In Chinese astrology, the zodiac sign seasons last for an entire year. Your birth year determines your Chinese zodiac sign. The Chinese zodiac cycle repeats every 12 years. The Chinese, or Lunar, New Year begins on February 1, 2022. The date of the Lunar New Year is dictated by the Chinese lunisolar calendar, so it is celebrated on a different date in January or February each year. The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, marks the transition from one animal to the next as the Lunar New Year changes.
